The Caribbean Sea is a sea of the Atlantic Ocean situated in the tropics of the Western hemisphere. It is bounded by Mexico and Central America to the west and southwest, to the north by the Greater Antilles, and to the east by the Lesser Antilles.
The entire area of the Caribbean Sea, the numerous islands of the West Indies, and adjacent coasts, are collectively known as the Caribbean. The Caribbean Sea is one of the largest salt water seas and has an area of about 2,754,000 km². The sea's deepest point is the Cayman Trough, between the Cayman Islands and Jamaica, at 7,686 m below sea level. The Caribbean coastline has many gulfs and bays: the Gulf of Gonâve, Gulf of Venezuela, Gulf of Darién, Gulf of Honduras, etc.
加勒比海位于西半球，地处大西洋沿岸的热带地区。西部和西南部与中美洲及墨西哥相邻，北接大安的列斯群岛，东接小安的地列斯群岛。
加勒比海的整体范围包含：西印度群岛以及相邻海岛（包括北部的古巴、海地、多米尼加、牙买加、波多黎各和东部的小安的列斯群岛）。加勒比海是世界上最大的咸水海之一。总面积为275.4万平方公里。海的最深处为开曼海沟，位于开曼群岛和牙买加之间，它比海平面低约7,686米。大大小小的海湾环绕在加勒比海海岸周围：戈纳夫湾、委内瑞拉湾、达连湾、洪都拉斯湾等等。
